Fashion Tip Of the Day

Skinny jeans and baggy jeans do not work on teenagers. What made you think they would work for you? Classic straight-leg or boot-cut jeans with the waist sitting comfortably on your, well, waist just below or right at the navel – that is the cut of jeans or slacks that you want to look for. Look for darker rather than light washes because darker colors tend to look slimming. If you get the hem at just the right place (or get them tailored to the right hem), you can set off the shape and length of your leg without going skinny. Just as trousers with tapered legs thankfully went out of fashion, one can only wait for skinny jeans for men to leave their off-balance lack of style as quickly as they came. And baggy jeans flatter no one – why do you want to look like you have a sagging ass? Easy tip: if someone tries to pants you and they succeed, you are wearing the wrong jeans.

It doesn’t hurt to ask for help

So you walk into a department or boutique store and have no idea where to start. It would be too easy to just get a package filled with shirts, buy three of the same pants your size in different colors, purchase them, and leave within five minutes. But that is no way to assert yourself. If you want class, you have got to work for it like most things in life. If you are not sure what to do, don’t feel bad about asking a sales associate. I know that men have historically had issue with asking for directions, but that kind of thinking leads to The Hills Have Eyes. If you do not want to have the sartorial equivalent of radiation-poisoned monsters, ask for help. And be sure not to pick the sales associate who mixes plaid with polka dots – make sure you like what he is wearing first.

Fashion Show Extravaganza

If you truly want to be fashion forward, acknowledge that fashion is not just for women and watch a fashion show catered to men. It may be filled with the wild and wacky that people would not be caught dead in outside the catwalk, but there are moments when you can see potential. Above all, everything you will see in a fashion show is the cutting edge – look for common, ahem, threads between the various cuts and designs to see the kinds of things that are in for the season. If you take that and run with it in your boutique or department stores, you can be ahead of the game and setting the pace in your office or among your circle of friends. Just please, for the love of God, don’t wear the feathered headdress. Show some discernment, initiative, and individuality in what you are willing to put on your body.

Wearing a Vest to Stand Out

If you are tired of just wearing shirts and pants all the time and you want a different sort of look while still looking classy, try wearing a tan or gray vest. You can interchange it with jeans, corduroys, khakis, and your suit trousers. It provides some visual interest on an otherwise plain ensemble, and it will certainly set you off from the crowd better than a big belt buckle or a shirt that is too tight. In a way, the buttons on a vest can add a little bling without the trashiness, and the darting of the vest creates the illusion of a trimmer waist. Think of it as the sexy equivalent of a corset for men. And for the record, make sure you use a suit vest and not a sweater vest. You want to be stylish, not stuffy, and you certainly do not want to bring up the memory of the old Cosby Show sweaters. Leave that to Bill.

Mens Fashion Tip: Invest in a tailor

Give in and invest in a tailor. Before eighty years ago, clothes were made for individual people so that they fit the person – now men and women have to find clothes that fit them. And in some cases, men do not even pay enough attention to fit. Odds are that you are not the mannequin that fashion designers dress, and while men’s sizes are a bit more physically inclusive than women’s, it’s amazing what a good tailor can do for your clothes. And what your tailored clothes can do for you. They can emphasize your good points and hide your less favorable body areas, giving you clean lines and hems that make you look like a million bucks. Account for the average tailoring whenever you buy new clothes – it makes everything cost a little more, but it makes you look better, and in a business situation, anything that makes you appear more professional can only help your upward mobility.
