On your first date, always underdress. Jeans, sneakers or sandals, a nice button-down or polo shirt, maybe a vest or a well-cut leather jacket. The key is to appear cool and collected, yet comfortable enough that the rest of the date does not have the high standards of an anniversary dinner. Remember, first dates are like introductions – no need to raise your potential partner’s expectations higher than you can reach for a second or third date. You are setting the stage for the rest of the relationship, so it is best to be relaxed at the beginning. So can the suit or silk shirt and slip into denim and cotton. The best thing to do is to keep it as real and honest as possible while still being clean and attractive. After all, if your first impression is of a slob, that is not any more appealing than someone who takes himself too seriously.
